We don’t think anyone doubts how highly director Guillermo del Toro values art. His movies are consistent visual spectacles that are as gorgeous as they are uncompromising. With his latest release Frankenstein available to stream right now, we can all see how del Toro’s vision stands out from the other adaptations of the classic novel. For Guillermo del Toro, there is nothing more important than creating great art, and he believes it is the first step toward fighting fascism.
While accepting an award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, Guillermo del Toro, who has always been outspoken both creatively and politically, talked about how important art is in the world today. “Be kind, be involved, believe in your art,” he said. “At a time when people tell you art is not important, that is always the prelude to fascism. When they tell you it doesn’t matter, when they tell you a fucking app can do art you say, if it’s that important, why the fuck do they want it so bad? The answer is because they think they can debase everything that makes us a little better, a little more human. And that, in my book, and in my life, includes monsters.”
Guillermo del Toro has been a passionate proponent of art, no matter the format, and has spoken harshly about the dangers of AI. In fact, his recent Frankenstein film was born out of his frustration with generative AI. Always remember that no one – not an app and not the oppressive forces of fascism trying to silence you – can create art quite like you can.
Frankenstein is streaming on Netflix right now.
