What does it feel like when your older brother is in charge of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and the entire DC Universe?
For Sean Gunn, it’s exciting. The actor’s older brother James Gunn has been co-president of DC Studios since 2022. However, superhero films are nothing new for the Gunn brothers. James wrote and directed Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, The Suicide Squad, and Max’s Peacemaker. Sean has been a working actor for decades and has had roles in his brother’s various Marvel and DC projects, including the upcoming film Superman.
Sean Gunn, who will be playing Maxwell Lord in Superman, was recently asked what he could tease about the upcoming film, but the actor played it close to the vest. “Nothing really. I wish I could. I can tell you that the movie is going to be awesome,” Gunn said to a crowd at Indiana Comic Convention. “I can’t wait for an audience to experience it. The actors are just exquisite, honestly. It’s so good. Particularly David [Corenswet] and Rachel [Brosnahan] at the top of the bill are really sharp and awesome.”
Gunn went on to say that his brother is taking the lessons he learned from the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and The Suicide Squad and using them to make Superman and the rest of the DC Studios slate better.
“He’s always been a very prepared director, almost to a maniacal point where he’s really on top of every little thing that goes on in his movies. He’s more prepared before getting to set than I think anyone would know.”
“Not just the most of any director that I’ve ever worked with, but a lot of the most experienced actors say, ‘I’ve never worked with somebody who already has so much done before we get to set.’ That’s kind of his way of working. I think it’s one of the really cool things about DC, is that I think he sort of figured out his method of working in a way that really worked for him, particularly on The Suicide Squad and Guardians 3, so then when he started to take over DC, he’s able to structure things in a way so that a lot of the process was streamlined. It’s a cliché to say a well-oiled machine, but so far, it really is. I think his movies are really meticulously sort of organized.”
Sean has also heard good things about DC Studios’ other projects.
“I’ve loved the things that I’ve read and the things that I’ve seen, and I know that there is such good buzz around the things I haven’t read, like Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and Lanterns. Supposedly, they’re just kind of humming along right now and cooking, so I’m pretty excited about it too.”
Superman flies into theaters on July 11.
