A Josie and the Pussycats sequel is being discussed, says Tara Reid - but she doubts it will get made
Spin around, indeed: Tara Reid says a Josie and the Pussycats sequel would be “the coolest movie ever”

In a world full of sequels, reboots, and reunions, is there room for Josie and the Pussycats to make a comeback? In 2001 MGM Pictures and Universal Pictures co-produced Josie and the Pussycats, a musical comedy based on the Archie Comics characters. The film was a fun sendup of pop music culture, as the band uncovered a dark conspiracy that had been plaguing the music industry for decades. Unfortunately, it had a lukewarm reception at the box office and was considered a financial failure.
However, those who saw the film loved it, and it’s become somewhat of a cult classic. The cast still get asked about the film, and now there are rumblings of a possible sequel.
“Now we’re thinking of making a second one. That would be the coolest movie ever. If the Backstreet Boys could do it, we could do it,” Melody actress Tara Reid said during a panel at Spacecon 2026.
Later in the panel, Reid seemed less optimistic about the sequel being made.
“I don’t think there will be a sequel, that’s why I’m putting it out there,” Reid reveaked. This echoes similar comments from her Josie costar Rachael Leigh Cook. However, Reid hasn’t given up all hope, and she even has an idea for the film’s story.
“I think we could do like everyone else’s comeback. Think about the Backstreet Boys, they didn’t talk to each other for like 15 years. Or make another record or whatever. So, it’s a thing. We just come back with each other.”
When asked how the group broke up, Reid simply offered up, “Probably Melody did something stupid.”
The music industry has gone through a lot of changes since 2001, so it would be interesting to see Josie, Melody, and Valerie react to Spotify, TikTok, and livestreams. Let’s hope this Pussycats comeback gets off the ground.
