Nintendo has ideas for more movies after Super Mario Bros. and Legend of Zelda

Things are looking good for Nintendo at the moment. The Switch 2 has launched and became the fastest-selling console in the company’s history. Meanwhile, 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie was a billion-dollar box office hit, which has prompted the company to look at new ways to expand the reach of its iconic characters. According to the company’s most recent earnings report, they’ve got plans for movies that extend even beyond the live-action The Legend of Zelda movie currently in production.

We already know about the Super Mario Bros. sequel that is due out in April 2026, followed by The Legend of Zelda movie in May 2027 – though there are scant few details about that film yet. However, Nintendo President Shutaro Furukawa explained that there are even more projects in the works that they can’t talk about just yet. Because they don’t simply license the rights to their characters to film studios, Nintendo “is deeply involved in production and makes investments as needed,” Furukawa said, adding, “This allows us to maintain a strong commitment to the quality of the final product.”

Considering the return on investment they got from The Super Mario Bros. Movie, it isn’t surprising they want to follow it up with other films based on their iconic characters. “Although we cannot discuss our plans beyond The Legend of Zelda movie at this time,” Furukawa concluded. “We are working on various other projects.”

That just leaves us to speculate on which other Nintendo characters might be headed to the big screen in the coming years. If we were placing bets, we’d say Metroid is a safe bet. Samus is an action heroine practically made for the big screen. Considering how far out Nintendo is apparently planning, we’ll probably have to wait several years to even get any of the potential titles confirmed.
