Jason Blum wants to keep Obsession away from streaming for as long as possible

What is Obsession's streaming release date? Blumhouse's CEO is more concerned about the movie's "long, consistent theatrical window"

Here's a hot tip from me, horror movie fan: go see Curry Barker's Obsession in theaters, if you can. The movie is having an incredible moment right now, and the more tickets that get sold, the better the chances are that more unique horror movies will follow it. But there's another side to my advice that's a little bit more short term - that is, that you should go see Obsession because it's going to be a while before it streams.

At least, according to Jason Blum.

Blum, CEO of Obsession's production studio, Blumhouse, recently sat down with Variety to discuss the Inde Navarrette-starring frightener, at at one point in the discussion, got into its future as a post-theatrical product. While Obsession's streaming date is "big topic of conversation at the moment," says the Paranormal Activity and Five Nights at Freddy's producer, he is also a "big believer in a long, consistent theatrical window."

"It’s great the audience is aware of it," Blum continued, "You would think they would say, 'I want to buy it at home.' But they’re actually cheering for the movie to stay in theaters longer. [...] People cherish the theatrical experience, and they’re willing to give up the convenience of seeing something at home to keep their local theater alive."

Again, I am a big proponent of couching this in terms of supporting new voices in unique horror projects, and as Blum brings up here, in supporting the movie theater business in general. But hey, let's not forget that you have a very selfish, perfectly acceptable reason for snagging that Obsession ticket as quickly as you can - that is, you just shouldn't have to wait.

Obsession is in theaters now.
