Netflix is already mulling a Thursday Murder Club sequel, and director Chris Columbus said they will decide this week

Columbus, who navigated stars Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, and Ben Kingsley through Netflix’s treacherous tale, says there’s one thing that will determine a Thursday Murder Club 2 - the viewership

I don’t know about you, but I could not be more delighted to be living in a new golden age of murder mystery entertainment. From Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building to Peacock’s Poker Face to Netflix’s Knives Out and A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, the urge to sleuth has never been stronger. Which is why it should come as no shock that The Thursday Murder Club director Chris Columbus is already thinking about a sequel.

What might come a s a shock, though? We could know if the sequel has been confirmed within a few days.

Let’s back up - in case you don’t know, The Thursday Murder Club is an adaptation of the 2020 Richard Osman novel of the same name, which tells the story of three amateur sleuths in a retirement village who stumble upon a real homicide case. Those would-be Sherlocks are played by Helen Mirren, Ben Kingsley, and Pierce Brosnan, and the film is directed by Chris Columbus. Should the opportunity arise, it appears the cast would all come back for another case  - and speaking to News.com.au, the director said the call might come sooner than later.

“We’re about to release on Netflix,” Columbus told the outlet ahead of the film’s August 28 debut, “So it’s all based on how many people watch the film over the first weekend. We will know in about 10 days if we’re making a sequel. As far as I’m concerned, and I don’t want to speak for everyone else, I would come back in a second.”

We’ll do the math so you don’t have to - Columbus’s video interview was published the day of the film’s release, even though it was clearly recorded before. But being generous with the timeline, that would mean those days would certainly have passed by September 6.

No matter if or when a Thursday Murder Club sequel is announced, the Modern Age of Murder is still going strong. I just think it would be all the stronger if we keep putting Helen Mirren on the case.

The Thursday Murder Club is streaming on Netflix now.
