IMAX made Tom Holland think he was a bad actor (at least as far as Christopher Nolan was concerned)

Maybe someone should have told Tom Holland why Christopher Nolan kept shouting cut on the set of The Odyssey.

Tom Holland has rightly received plenty of praise for his performances over the years, but even the Spider-Man star was rattled while working with Christopher Nolan on The Odyssey. However, it turns out that Tom Holland’s nerves were set off not because of any feedback he got from Nolan but instead by IMAX cameras for the first time.

“Working with the IMAX cameras for the first time is an experience,” Tom Holland said in a recent interview alongside director Christopher Nolan. “It is unlike anything I have ever seen before, and I didn’t know that it only ran for three minutes. So, I remember you would continue cutting, and I was with Jon [Bernthal], like, ‘Why does he keep cutting? Why does he keep doing that?’ And in my head, I was like, ‘Does he not like what we’re doing? What is happening?’ And then, I remember it was actually [stunt coordinator] George Cottle that was like, ‘No no no, there’s only three minutes in the mag.’ I was like, ‘Oh thank god.’ I thought I was totally shitting the bed in this scene.”

In a way, it is comforting to know that someone like Tom Holland, who has achieved remarkable success over the course of his career, can still get hit with imposter syndrome when he is in a new situation. We thought that it would be working with someone like Christopher Nolan, whose love of practical effects might be a change from Holland’s work as Spider-Man in the MCU. Turns out, he was just nervous because of the limitations of the IMAX cameras.

The Odyssey will reach theaters July 17.
