Avengers Assemble one last time, Steven Spielberg knows UFOs, and not all Javiers wear Cape (Fear)s: Popverse Playlist for June 6-June 12 2026

Apple's Cape Fear leads a week in which we find out the truth about aliens and Marvel destroys the Avengers (again)

If you’re reading these words, congratulations — you made it to the weekend one more time. Take a second to pat yourself on the back (at least metaphorically; for all I know, attempting it in real life might be too painful considering what this week’s been like), and then stop! Start thinking about the fact that it’s not just a weekend that lies ahead, but a full week of pop culture pleasures to indulge in! There’s so much out there that you need someone to help, but never fear: Popverse Playlist is here.

This week: Steven Spielberg is ready to reveal the truth about aliens, Javier Bardem is here to scare the pants off you (complimentary), and the Avengers are not ready to face off against their next big comic book threat.

If you only watch one show this week, then it really has to be… Cape Fear

As if the cast list of this show didn’t get our attention right out of the gate — Amy Adams! Patrick Wilson! The always underrated CCH Pounder! Javier Bardem being particularly creepy yet also strangely charming! — the fact that showrunner Nick Antosca described this remake of the 1991 Robert DeNiro vehicle (which was, itself, a remake of a 1962 movie starring Gregory Peck) as a “nightmare remix” of both earlier versions with all new elements added convinced us to check this out. (He told Empire Magazine, “It's like you've seen the [other versions] then went to sleep and had a nightmare about it.”) It’s a fitting description of a show that’s at once claustrophobic and unsettling and also exciting and addictive. And if you’ve seen the earlier movies…? Don’t assume you know the story of this take.

The first episodes of Cape Fear are already on Apple TV, with new episodes every Friday.

If you check out one movie this week, then it should be… Disclosure Day

It’s very simple math: Steven Spielberg + Aliens = Good Stuff. We’ve seen it many times before, whether it’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, or even 2005’s post-9/11 thriller War of the Worlds, so it's something we can just... appreciate. When it comes to Disclosure Day, the movie’s been purposefully vague in its promotion, meaning that we think it’s an alien abduction story that’s also a conspiracy theory movie about whether or not we’re alone out there and what the authorities might have done to keep that subject a mystery, but… honestly? It’s entirely unclear what Disclosure Day is really about, and that’s a large part of its appeal. An actual surprise in a big blockbuster movie? In this day and age? From one of the grand masters of cinema who’s still, somehow, at the top of his game? How could anyone say no?

Disclosure Day arrives in theaters June 12.

If you can only pick up one comic this week, then make sure it’s… Avengers: Armageddon #1

If there’s one thing a lifetime of reading superhero comics has taught us, it’s that it’s always the end of the world as we know it somewhere. This summer, that somewhere happens to be the Marvel Universe, which is teasing a full-scale makeover of the Avengers and the wider status quo. It’s all thanks to the Red Hulk, who’s taken over Doctor Doom’s old homeland after the iron-clad villain’s apparent death... but, of course, that kind of thing doesn’t happen without some people having concerns, so it’s down to Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to sort things out or die trying. Of course, given that Marvel has been teasing the longterm effects of this particular series for months, it’s safe to say that “die trying” might carry a little more weight than it normally does. How big are the changes going to be? How different is the Marvel Comic Book Universe going to get before the end of the year? We have no idea, and we’re excited to find out.

Avengers: Armageddon #1 is in comic book stores on June 10, 2026.
