Warner Bros Discovery CEO names DC's four most important characters as he sees them, and one might come as a surprise

For Warner Bros Discovery boss David Zaslav, the DC Universe is anchored by the Trinity and Supergirl, not the Green Lantern Corps

David Zaslav, the CEO of Warner Bros Discovery has shared an optimistic picture for the future of the DC brand in a call discussing the studio's Q1 earnings. And it's one that rests squarely on the shoulders of two of DC Comics' mightiest Kryptonian characters, Superman and Supergirl.

In a transcript from Warner Bros Discovery's Q1 2025 Earnings Conference Call shared on Seeking Alpha, David Zaslav stated that the "major characters" "that James Gunn and Peter Safran are developing with their 10-year plan around DC... to build asset value for us globally everywhere in the world, Wonder Woman, Batman, Superman, Supergirl... We look at those as big asset builders and big differentiators."

It should be noted that Zaslav mentioned the upcoming Green Lantern show for HBO, Lanterns, elsewhere in the call, but it's curious to see the Green Lantern Corps left out of the "asset value" conversation in favor of another Kryptonian character. Don't get me wrong, I'm a ride or die Supergirl fan, and I'm happy to see that there's so much invested in Kara's character at Warner Bros Discovery. But I'm also from the same generation that fell in love with the Green Lantern mythos thanks to Phil Lamarr's portrayal of John Stewart on the Justice League animated series in the early 2000s.

Let's also not forget that the Green Lantern Corps is spread across the entire universe, and unites thousands of alien species. The GLC alone contains a considerable portion of the cosmic elements within the world of DC.  From this point of view, could Lanterns be aimed squarely at an adult audience on HBO, akin to Creature Commandos? The series has been described as influenced by True Detective, which definitely isn't a show most of us would put on while hanging out with our families, but then again, the Nolan Batman movies weren't exactly built for elementary kiddos, either.

Either way, as we get closer to Lanterns's release, it's worth keeping an eye on how Warner Bros Discovery markets the show.
