Zootopia 2 is now the most successful American animated movie of all time (really)

Zootopia 2 has earned Disney $1.7 billion at the global box office and has overtaken Inside Out 2 as the highest-grossing American animated film of all time.

We’re going to be honest with you – sometimes the Internet doesn’t tell you the whole story. While social media and online chatter around Zootopia 2 have been relatively quiet, the Disney film has continued a remarkable box office run. In fact, Zootopia 2 has become the highest-grossing animated film in Hollywood history.

We know. We’re surprised too.

Disney has reported that Zootopia 2 has earned $1.7 billion at the global box office, overtaking 2024’s Inside Out 2 – another Disney sequel – to become the most successful animated film in Hollywood history. It still has a long way to go to catch Ne Zha 2, which gained $2.25 billion globally but wasn’t produced by a Motion Picture Association studio.

It seems unlikely that Zootopia 2 will overtake Ne Zha 2 at the box office, but it remains a remarkable achievement for a film that hasn’t made a massive impact on social media chatter. Similar to how James Cameron’s Avatar films clearly have a huge following but don’t have hugely quotable or memeable moments, Zootopia 2 feels like it has slipped under the radar, almost quietly breaking box office records. There is so little chatter about this movie that the next time we hear about it, we expect it will be when Disney announces the inevitable Zootopia 3.

Zootopia 2 opened just before the Thanksgiving weekend with $559.5 million at the global box office, a record for an animated film. It was also 2025’s best opening and became the fastest PG-rated film to reach $1 billion globally.
