Creature Commandos member G.I. Robot "is the hero for these troubling times," says DC Studios voice actor Sean Gunn

"Like G.I. Robot, I hate Nazis," Sean Gunn explained about his affinity to the breakout star of DC Studios' Creature Commandos animated series

G.I. Robot was a breakout star of DC's Creature Commandos animated series on HBO Max.

The mechanical soldier - who's had several incarnations in the comics, starting in 1961's Star-Spangled War Stories #101 - is, like Inglorious Basterds' Aldo Raine, in the Nazi-killin' business, and ended up in the infamous Belle Reve Penitentiary after continuing to carry out his mission more than a half century after World War II ended by wiping out a group of Neo-Nazis. It was the perfect set up for him to serve on Amanda Waller's Creature Commandos team. The character had a fan-favorite story arc on the show, culminating with a particularly memorable fight scene set to Dresden Dolls' 'Coin-Operated Boy.'

Actor Sean Gunn said he was excited to play the role in the series his brother James Gunn created.

"Like G.I. Robot, I hate Nazis," Sean Gunn explained at Fan Expo Chicago. "He's the hero that we need for these troubling times."

Gunn said he responded to the character right away: "James told me about the character pretty early on when he was writing Creature Commandos, and was in the midst of putting the whole thing together. He said, 'I have another character.' He had asked me if I'd do Weasel, so he asked me if I would do another character. He's a really interesting character."

Sean Gunn put a lot of thought into how to bring G.I. Robot to life, telling the crowd that he was "watching old newsreels, like news on the march kind of things. I felt like his voice would be specifically engineered so that it's soothing for people to hear."

He continued, saying that G.I. Robot "has a limited toolkit. He's a robot, but a robot who's just teetering on the edge of understanding things the way a human does. He knows that he has this one basic objective, which is killing Nazis and that's his driving force for everything. But he can also sense the idea of friendship feels good. Something about that human connection feels right and he wants more of that. He's just dipping his toe in the waters of being sentient and understanding what it means to be human. That's an interesting place for me to play as an actor. I love that character."

Creatures Commandos season 1 is available now on HBO Max.
