How do superheroes go to the bathroom? According to The Flash star Tom Cavanagh, it takes an entire team to help
Superhero and supervillain actors need specialized teams to help them use the bathroom while in costume - and things get tricky when the team isn’t available

Superhero and supervillain costumes might look cool onscreen, but they’re not exactly bathroom friendly. Most of the costumes are tight, and don’t have much in the way of openings. According to Tom Cavanagh, who played Reverse-Flash on The Flash, it takes an entire team of crew members to help actors get in and out of them.
This becomes a problem if an actor has to use the bathroom. This becomes an even bigger problem when their costume specialist isn’t around.
Tom Cavanagh recalls a time he was appearing on Supergirl, and his usual team wasn’t around to help him remove the costume. “I had to go to the bathroom, and sometimes for the Reverse-Flash suits you would have someone who was an expert in the suit,” Cavanagh says during a panel at Fan Expo Denver 2025.
“In the crossovers, somebody got lost in the mix. The first Reverse-Flash suit had a zipper that started at the back that I couldn’t reach, and it came across the front. I watched these poor people from Supergirl, three of them, trying to get the zipper. You couldn’t do it. Serena could do it and no one else could do it. And I was like, ‘It’s fine, I’ll just go in the suit. It’s fine.’ I felt so bad for them. What are they doing over there?”
When you’ve got to go, you’ve got to go. As long as, you know, you get to go.
