Most fantasy anime start when the world is in crisis, but Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End picks up when the land is entering a time of peace. The adventurers have returned from their journey to defeat the Demon King and are greeted as heroes in their homeland. The first season of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End was one of the big anime hits of 2023 and was quickly confirmed to be followed by another. Now, we know the general release date for Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End season two and we’re already counting down the days.
There is a wonderful sense of melancholy in many of the episodes of season one, which was a stark contrast to other fantasy anime, particularly isekai shows. Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End explores how the long lifespans of elves in fantasy would feel to other people. Frieren casually suggests that the party meet up again in 50 years, it is because that amount of time is almost nothing to her. She is shocked to discover that her friends have aged and, in the case of Himmel the Hero, die shortly after they meet up again.
Season one explored the titular elf as she tried to reconnect with humans after seeing someone dear to her age and die. Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End season two is due out in January 2026 and will continue her attempts to build connections and to find her way to the land where souls reside after a person passes on. It hasn’t been confirmed how many episodes will be in the Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End season two yet. Studio Madhouse is returning to animate the new season.
