Who's the 'smart one' of Vox Machina? Depending on where you enter the adventure begun in Critical Role Campaign 1, your answers are probably going to vary. One answer you might not give, though, is Travis Willingham's Grog Strongjaw, the goliath barbarian that's... uh, less intelligent than his fellows. At least, up until now. Yes, Critters, we're about to see Grog in a whole different intellectual light once The Legend of Vox Machina season 4 drops on Prime Video.
Willingham himself informed mentioned this character shift to Popverse's own Trent Cannon, who was chatting with the Vox Machina cast ahead of season 4's June premiere. But just to clarify, the slightly smarter version of Grog we're apparently about to get isn't completely a surprise.
"I think Grog is sort of unintentionally wise in the first campaign," Willingham said, "He has these little moments of either inspiration or clarity, and maybe some strategic thinking from time to time. But otherwise he lets the cerebral stuff to the others of the group."
"In this upcoming season," the Dispatch star continued, "There will be an inflection point where Grog's gonna peel back the layers. He's gonna get rid of the things that have held his mind back, and he will be able to journey into cerebral and intellectual realms nigh unseen by a half-giant as handsome as he. I hope the fallout from it is not too much for our audience."
"He's got an emotional intelligence to him," agreed costar Marisha Ray.
We're very interested to see what form either of those intelligences take, gang.
The Legend of Vox Machina season 4 heads to Prime Video beginning on June 3.
