Ridley Scott is still working on an Alien: Covenant sequel, despite everything

During an interview, Ridley Scott dropped a big hint about what the long-awaited sequel to Alien: Covenant will be about.

The Alien franchise has endured for decades after its initial release because there is still so much left to explore in that world. Original director Ridley Scott has left the series and come back over the years, but he wants to assure fans that he’s not done with Alien just yet. Among the other projects he’s juggling at the moment, he still has his long-awaited Alien: Covenant sequel he’s hoping to finish one day.

During a wide-ranging interview, Ridley Scott talked about several of the projects he’s currently trying to develop. His Treasure Island movie starring Hugh Jackman is the furthest along in development, but he’s still working on getting his Bee Gees biopic made as well. Most interesting to sci-fi fans is probably the hint Scott dropped about what his Alien: Covenant sequel will be about.

The plot follows Michael Fassbender’s David, a malfunctioning AI that is trying to create a “brave new world for himself.” The concept leans into the role that AI plays in our lives. “AIs can go off,” Scott emphasized. “And if they do, it’s like a bomb.”

The role of AI and other emerging technologies has long been a subject of both the Alien franchise and Ridley Scott’s other works like Blade Runner. The power of AI to destroy and disrupt is something of a hot topic at the moment, so it isn’t surprising that this is where Ridley Scott’s mind goes when he’s planning the sequel to Alien: Covenant.

This is undoubtedly a welcome update for Alien fans, who have been waiting for nearly a decade to find out what happens next following Alien: Covenant, but it sounds like we’ll still be waiting a while to find out anything more substantial about the movie.
