Disney+'s Goosebumps series made one big mistake according to R.L. Stine: not making it for kids

R.L. Stine thought the Disney+ Goosebumps series was good, but believes it was a mistake to aim it towards adults instead of kids

Since its debut in 1992, the Goosebumps brand has had its fair share of success. The book series has been a publishing juggernaut, dominating school book fairs, and selling millions of copies. The 1995 Fox Kids series is fondly remembered today, and the 2015 theatrical film had a respectable box office run. All in all, the Goosebumps brand has a great track record.

So, why was the Disney+ series cancelled after two seasons?  Streaming aggregator websites reported that the numbers were strong, and the series was nominated for numerous awards, including multiple Children’s Emmys. Whatever the case is, Disney+ opted to end the show after two seasons.

While Goosebumps creator R.L. Stine enjoyed the show, he thought it was a mistake to aim it towards an older audience. The series dropped the anthology format Goosebumps is known for in favor of serialized storytelling with more mature themes.

“That was a weird series, I thought,” R.L. Stine tells Popverse’s Grant DeArmitt at New York Comic Con 2025. “It was Goosebumps and not for kids. It was a Goosebumps series not for kids. What was that about? I don’t know. I thought it was pretty good.”
