What makes Hazbin Hotel so popular? It could be that it's "a power fantasy for a theater kid," as songwriter Sam Haft puts it

Haft, who is also responsible for one of the most recognizable numbers on the Five Nights at Freddy's soundtrack, reminds us that Hazbin Hotel really is a show where people sing to solve their problems

What makes Hazbin Hotel so popular? I don't think anyone would disagree if I were to offer the answer "theater kids," although that is a bit glib, no? Maybe the correct question is more along the lines of 'Why is Hazbin Hotel so popular with those theater kids?'. And if that's the question we're going to ask, Sam Haft, has the answer.

In case you don't already know, Haft is the composer of some of Hazbin's most iconic numbers, having worked directly with creator Vivienne Medrano. Recently, Haft spoke with HuffPost about the appeal the raunchy, animated musical comedy had with its ravenous and rapidly growing fanbase.

"It’s a classic fish out-of-water story," said Haft, "You have the character of Charlie Morningstar, whose earnestness and sincerity and relentless heart allow this dark, twisted world where everyone is cruel to change and conform around her. It’s a power fantasy for a theater kid."

I mean, that does track - the world of musicals theater kids are so used to are clearer than our real life because of their ability to break into song without anyone thinking it's weird. Also interesting to note, here - along with his role of Hazbin songster, Haft is half of the duo that make up The Living Tombstone, known for creating the Five Nights at Freddy's theme featured in both the games and movies.

We'd be fascinated to hear whose power fantasy Haft thinks FNAF is.

Hazbin Hotel seasons 1 and 2 are streaming now on Prime Video.
