VisionQuest star Paul Bettany says James Spader is "delicious" as Ultron in the upcoming Marvel show
James Spader is returning as Ultron in VisionQuest after more than ten years away, and Vision actor Paul Bettany says it's worth the wait

Paul Bettany is set to return as Vision this October in his own Disney Plus streaming series VisionQuest. According to Bettany, the show takes Vision back to his roots as he confronts his villainous creator, the returning Ultron - played once again by James Spader, returning to the role for the first time since 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron. Bettany has high praise for Spader as Ultron, explaining that the evil AI's relationship with Vision is central to the story.
"Got some Spader back, yeah. And he is delicious. He is so funny in this. It's so delicious to watch him. We loved working together. I loved it so much," Bettany said on the podcast Happy Sad Confused.
As fans will undoubtedly recall, Vision was created by Ultron in Avengers: Age of Ultron as a new, perfect body for the villain. However, Vision gained his own consciousness, eventually being the one to defeat Ultron.
This mirrors Vision's history in comics, where he was also built by Ultron as a weapon to take on the Avengers. However, Vision quickly realized he was being manipulated by Ultron, joining forces with the Avengers to defeat his creator. Vision has since become a staple of the Avengers, with his relationship to Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch, being one of the team's longest running subplots.
Though Ultron is best known to fans as a terrifying AI with an apparently endless supply of nigh-indestructible bodies to house his artificial consciousness, in comics there have been several humanoid versions of Ultron over the years. Bettany stays mum when asked if James Spader would appear as a version of Ultron with a human body, only hinting that the show will be worth watching for Ultron fans.
"I think that would be beyond my paygrade to tell you. Worth sticking around for. The story largely revolves around that relationship, and it's real fun. It's fun stuff," Bettany teased. (It's worth noting that a distinctly human-looking Spader appeared in the VisionQuest teaser shown at NYCC 2025.)
The saga of Vision and Scarlet Witch has been one of the biggest plotlines in the MCU, stretching across Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and the streaming shows WandaVision and Agatha All Along. VisionQuest will mark the next chapter in the story, potentially leading into December's Avengers: Doomsday crossover film... although Bettany isn't sure if he's in that movie or not.
