50 years after the original, Mel Brooks has blessed a Young Frankenstein prequel from the What We Do in the Shadows team
Brooks is giving his blessing to the team of Stefani Robinson, Taika Waititi, and Garrett Basch, who are tackling Frankensteins after having their fill of vampires in FX's previous hit horror spoof

A half century after Mel Brooks unleashed legendary horror spoof Young Frankenstein onto the world, it's headed back to your screens. The small kind, this time. Deadline reported June 25 that a Young Frankenstein prequel, Very Young Frankenstein, was headed to FX as a series that not only has Brooks's blessing, but his name attached as an executive producer. And with the talent the show is bringing along, we can see why he'd agree to it.
The series is being developed by the same creatives behind FX's previous smash hit horror spoof, What We Do in the Shadows. That is:
- Stefani Robinson (no relation to Colin), who wrote and executive produced the vampire comedy, and will serve as showrunner for Very Young Frankenstein.
- Garrett Basch, another executive producer on the WWDITS team.
- Taika Waititi, who... come on, you know who Taika Waititi is. No? Fine, he created the WWDITS franchise and will direct the pilot episode of VYF. Happy?
I'd be remiss if I didn't point out that a Frankenstein-esque creature was a major character in the final season of What We Do in the Shadows, and I'd be lying if I didn't admit that the conspiratorial part of me didn't smell a spinoff brewing. However, Deadline confirms that the show has not cast anyone yet, a fact that still won't keep me from checking in on Andy Assaf, who played the revived corpse in the final season of WWDITS.
For those unfamiliar with Young Frankenstein, the 1974 comedy was co-written (with star Gene Wilder) and directed by comedy legend Brooks. Wilder played Frederick Frankenstein, a descendent of the original Dr. Frankenstein who'd done his best to avoid the family business until he inherits a castle in Transylvania and discovers his grandfather's research...
As of this writing, no plot or release date for Very Young Frankenstein have been announced. But still: it's a Young Frankenstein prequel from the people behind Young Frankenstein and What We Do In The Shadows. What more do we really need to know to get excited?
