A Tim Curry classic leads the way for Popverse Playlist for August 29-September 4, 2026

We pay tribute to the late Tim Curry while also celebrating a new and unusual comic book, and a sitcom return to the small screen from a big screen movie star

It’s been a week in pop culture this week, hasn’t it? Not going to lie, the loss of Dolly Parton on Tuesday hit hard amongst the Popverse crew, who spent a significant amount of time afterwards sharing stories about how much we loved her; same with the loss of Tim Curry the next day, although we’ll get to him in more detail in a minute. For now, let me offer up a quick station identification: You’re listening to Popverse Playlist, and we’re here to tell you what to watch and read across the next seven days, just to make your life a little easier as you deal with the other stuff.

This week: Glen Powell is a catfish in more ways than one, we revisit a Tim Curry classic, and there’s a beautiful, unexpected comic book for us to close out the week with. Come with us, why don’t you?

If you only watch one show this week, then it really has to be… Chad Powers Season 2

In between his big screen outings, Glen Powell’s made time for this sports comedy about a football player who finally has the career he’s dreamed of… while pretending to be someone else entirely. The second season drops in its entirety — six episodes — on Hulu and Disney+ this week, making it the ideal binge-watch while you’re waiting in between Ted Lasso episodes. This is, however, arguably the show for people who wish that Ted Lasso was more American, less sincere, and far, far less subtle; Chad’s team is called the South Georgia Catfishes, after all.

Chad Powers Season 2 drops on Hulu and Disney+ September 3.

If you only check out one movie this week, then it should be… Clue

Yes, I know that Clue originally came out back in 1985 — 41 years ago! — but in the wake of Tim Curry’s death this week, it’s never felt more timely. For those who have somehow never seen this, it’s a comedy classic that somehow manages to transform what should be a fairly lifeless premise (adapt the board game Clue into a movie) into one of the finest movies of the decade. Curry’s Wadsworth may be the character who (deservedly) gets a lot of attention, but the whole cast is at the top of their game, from Madeline Kahn’s Mrs. White to Martin Mull’s Colonel Mustard. In a week where we’ve lost too many greats, watch this in tribute to a truly magical comic performer.

Clue is streaming on Paramount+ now.

If you can only pick up one comic this week, then make sure it’s… The Cutting Garden

If there’s one thing that modern mainstream comics needs more of, it’s a big creative swing. Let’s take a moment to appreciate what The Cutting Garden is, in that case: a 128-page hand-printed-watercolors graphic novel described by publisher Image Comics as “a tender, brutal love story about mothers and daughters and what we become in their absence,” set in 1930s New Orleans. The art is beautiful, and it’s written by the somehow-still-underrated Darcy Van Poelgeest, who’s about to blow everyone away as the writer of DC’s upcoming Doom Patrol series; this is definitely going to be a book worth picking up and cherishing.

The Cutting Garden will be in comic book stores September 2, 2026.
