Sometimes, we all need a place to escape — and that’s especially true for those living in the cyberpunk hellscape of Chiba City, the setting for William Gibson’s 1984 science fiction classic Neuromancer. Thankfully, Chiba citizens could escape to the Chatsubo Bar... and, very soon, we’ll be able to visit as well, with Apple TV+ sharing a first glimpse of its Neuromancer TV show, currently in production.
To celebrate the 41st anniversary of Neuromancer’s initial publication, Apple TV+ has released a short video to give fans an idea of what they can expect from the series. The short (less-than 30 seconds!) clip shows the interior of the Chatsubo Bar, the getaway from the real world in Gibson’s cyberpunk classic. Judging by what little we see, it’s a place that leans heavily on the 1980s neon nostalgia of it all — but don’t think we didn’t see those old school arcade machines on the far right, as well. Wait, do we already want to go to the Chatsubo…?
Take a look at the clip for yourself:
It is certainly a stylish clip, and one that makes us hope that Neuromancer will deliver on the unique visuals of the Gibson novel and the various graphic novel adaptations that have followed. We’re curious how they’re going to update some of the themes of the novel that are somewhat stuck in the past, though; like many cyberpunk novels, Neuromancer (and the rest of Gibson’s ‘Sprawl trilogy,’ 1986’s Count era and 1988’s Mona Lisa Overdrive) has some lingering xenophobic moments that might not resonate with modern audiences.
The 10-episode series stars Masters of the Air’s Callum Turner as Case, “a damaged, top-rung super-hacker” alongside his partner, assassin Molly (Briana Middleton). The show also features Mark Strong, Cleménce Poésy, Peter Sarsgaard, Emma Laird, Joseph Lee, and Dane DeHaan. The series is co-created for television by Graham Roland and J.D. Dillard, with the former acting as the showrunner and the latter directing the first episode.
No release date for the show has been set.
