There are a lot of great hair moments in Star Trek history, but the early seasons of Star Trek: Voyager remain bewildering to watch at times because of Captain Janeway's hair. Now, there's nothing wrong with walking around with an elaborate updo. But considering the dire circumstances that the Voyager crew quickly found themselves in (stranded across the galaxy in the Delta Quadrant), you would think their captain wouldn't be caught up doing her hair every morning, right? Thankfully, the show ended up giving Janeway a simple and sensible bob haircut in later seasons. But the early 20th century hairstyles the captain wore earlier on in the show were the bane of actress Kathryn Mulgrew's existence while shooting the show. 

At Florida Supercon 2025's Star Trek: Voyager panel, Kathryn Mulgrew shared her feelings towards Janeway's early hairstyles. "I mean it's so ridiculous, 75,000 lightyears from home and she’s got a hairdresser in the ready room?!” Mulgrew said at Florida Supercon. Later, she explained, "There are no flyaways in space," referring to flyaway hairs. "Not even one hair. It can't be flying away, because of the gravity of space. I had these wigs, and I had my own hair, and [the hairstylists] were touching me all the time." 

Creating an updo like many of the ones that Janeway sported on the show is no walk in the park. It takes some serious arm strength to do on one's own, not to mention a significant amount of time and product. Considering that the crew of Voyager live and work on the ship, wouldn't it be more practical for Janeway to just have one hairstyle all the time?
