Netflix The One Piece anime remake is taking so long because it is a "pretty slow process" according to one Studio Wit character designer:
Netflix aren't about to rush the team behind their One Piece remake anime.

The One Piece manga has spawned a whole multimedia franchise, including multiple animated films, an ongoing anime that continues to reach new heights, and a live-action series that Netflix has been teasing the second season of for what feels like forever. But Netflix isn’t content to leave Eiichiro Oda’s property alone and has announced a remake of the anime – while the original is still running. However, since that announcement, we haven’t heard much about The One Piece from Netflix and studio Wit. The reason, it turns out, is that it takes a long time to go from page to screen.
The update came last month as Kyoji Asano, the character designer for The One Piece, explained in an interview that was first reported by reputable One Piece fan account @pewpiece that he had been drawing "One Piece cuts just the day before" and that he was "still actively working on it, but progress has been pretty slow.” How much of that is down to the fact that Asano has, by his own admission, become a little obsessed with Oda’s art style and how to recreate it is tough to say, but clearly they want to take the time to do One Piece justice.
Perhaps the biggest barrier to trying to remake One Piece is how much Oda’s style has changed over the years. Over the 25+ years that the manga has been published, there has been a significant change in how the characters are drawn – particularly the female characters.
The One Piece anime remake is still in production and will – eventually – make its way to Netflix. Hopefully, before the original anime finally reaches its conclusion.
