Too many movie & TV adaptations of comics try to outdo the original comic books, so with Prime Video's Invincible Robert Kirkman is out to correct that

Robert Kirkman says Invincible stands out from other comic book adaptations because it respects the source material

What makes Invincible different from other comic book television shows? Some might cite the violence, or the mature storytelling, but Invincible creator Robert Kirkman says it’s something simple that most comic book adaptations overlook.

“One thing that is different about Invincible is that we are trying to adapt the Invincible comic book the way that manga is adapted into anime,” Robert Kirkman says during a recent appearance on Robservations with Rob Liefeld. “We’re not trying to reinvent the wheel. We’re not trying to change the story in any significant way. I’m working with co-showrunner Simon Racioppa and the writing team. As we come up with improvements and ways to refine things and ways to make things better, we do those things, but there’s no long and involved process at the beginning of the season, and I’m telling you this happens on a lot of shows, where you go over what happened in the comic and you go, well, we can’t do that.”

“There’s too much effort put in to trying to completely overhaul the comic book story when these adaptations happen, and a lot of the times it’s to the detriment. I mean, how many times have we watched a television show or movie based on the comics that we love and thought to ourselves, why is this worse? And it’s because somebody with a big ego was like, ‘Yeah, I’ll adapt this comic, but I’ll make it good.’ Which is never the place where you want to be.”

The Invincible television series is a critical and commercial success, and its popularity has resulted in more sales for the original comic series. In other words, this is what happens when you respect the source material. Other comic book adaptations should take note.
