Invincible ending explained: What happens to Invincible, Omni-Man, the Viltrum Empire, and everyone else in Robert Kirkman’s original comic series

Here's what happened at the end of Invincible by Robert Kirkman, Ryan Ottley & Cory Walker.

Mark Grayson isn’t a typical superhero, and Invincible isn’t a typical superhero comic. Robert Kirkman, Ryan Ottley, and Cory Walker’s Image Comics series takes a more mature (and violent) look at the superhero medium. Case in point, unlike most traditional superhero comics, Invincible was written with an ending in mind.

The Invincible comic series, which ended in 2018, is currently being adapted as an animated series for Amazon Prime Video. The fourth season premieres March 2026, and if the trailer is any indication, it looks like the war against the Viltrum Empire is going to heat up. The hype for Invincible season four might have you wondering how things went down in the comics. If you’re curious, read on and we’ll explain the ending. Keep in mind, there are some spoilers here, so read on with caution.

What happens in the ending of the Invincible comics?

The Invincible comic series concludes in Invincible #144. Mark has just discovered the existence of Markus Murphy, his illegitimate son who was conceived after Anissa sexually assaulted him. Mark gives Markus a brief history of the Viltrum Empire, which serves as a recap for the previous 143 issues of the series. Afterwards, Mark, who is now the leader of the Viltrum Empire, heads to space with his wife Eve and their daughter Terra.

The issue then has numerous time skips, which eventually take us 500 years into the future. We see Markus become Kid Invincible and join the Guardians of the Globe. We get a brief tease with the daughter of Battle Beast and the son of Angstrom Levy, who both want revenge on Mark. We also see Terra grow up and forge her own path working alongside an intergalactic humanitarian relief program. She eventually dons her own version of the Invincible costume.

Under Mark’s leadership the Viltrum Empire has brought peace and prosperity to the galaxy, making the Coalition of Planets obsolete. This starts a conflict between the Coalition and the Viltrumites, but Mark and Allen are able to diffuse it (after some fighting). The Coalition disbands, and the galaxy continues to prosper under Mark’s leadership.

After another time skip, Eve seemingly dies of old age. However, her powers cause her body to regenerate shortly after she passes away. Eve, who now looks like a young woman again, realizes that she’s immortal. The final scene of the comic takes place 500 years after Mark became Invincible. Looking at the life he’s built, and the way he’s brought peace to the galaxy, Mark recalls Nolan’s words from Invincible #12, “What will you have after five hundred years.”

Mark considers the question and smiles.

Who dies in Invincible’s ending in the comics?

Honestly, just about every non-alien character. The final issue of Invincible features multiple time skips, with the final scene taking place 500 years in the future. The real question is who doesn’t die. While we don’t see their deaths, it can be assumed that the human characters like William Clockwell, Debbie Grayson, and Art Rosenbaum passed away from old age centuries earlier. The various hero characters may have had extended lifespans due to their powers, but it’s likely they passed as well.

An exception is Eve, who seemingly dies of old age before her powers resurrect her and restore her youth. “I guess I’m essentially immortal,” Eve says. Given Mark’s surprised reaction, it’s likely this only happened to Eve. Extraterrestrials like Allen were seen in the future, and due to his unique physiology, it’s possible that his lifespan allowed him to live for centuries. It can also be presumed that Immortal is still alive because…well…he’s immortal.

This article is only covering the Invincible finale, but some of you might be reading this and wondering about the fate of Omni-Man. Nolan dies in Invincible #141, a few issues before the finale. Omni-Man dies after sustaining critical injuries during a fight with Thragg. On his deathbed, he tells Mark to change the Viltrumite people for the better.

(And don’t worry, Mark rips Thragg’s throat out with his teeth, killing the intergalactic tyrant once and for all)

Will there be more comics for Invincible?

At the time of this writing, there are no plans for more Invincible comics. The original comic ended in 2018 with Invincible #144. Invincible creator Robert Kirkman always saw the series as a subversion of superhero tropes, and the decision to end the series was one of those subversions.

“Most superhero stories go on forever and ever and ever, and they usually get traded off to other creative teams, and they continue, and that’s what superhero stories do,” Kirkman says during a 2023 San Diego Comic Con panel. “With Invincible we were always going against type. Everything we did in these books was always unexpected and different. We used the tropes of superhero comics to try and show you new things and different things. The ultimate way to play against type with a superhero story was to give it a finality, to give it a proper ending.”

However, that hasn’t stopped Kirkman from expanding the Invincible Universe with new stories. In 2025 Kirkman reunited with Invincible collaborator Ryan Ottley for Invincible Universe: Battle Beast, a limited series that expanded on Battle Beast’s adventures before he met his demise at the hands of Thragg. While nothing else has been announced, there’s always a chance we could get more Invincible Universe miniseries based around different supporting characters.

Will the Invincible TV finale closely follow the Invincible comic finale?

As of this writing, the first three seasons of Invincible have aired on Amazon Prime Video. Invincible creator Robert Kirkman estimates that it will take around seven, eight, or nine seasons to tell the complete story, which means it will be a while before we see the ending. At this stage, it’s too early to say how closely the show will follow the ending from the comics, especially because things evolve in the writers room.

However, based on the episodes released so far, we can make an educated guess. The television series closely follows the comic book adaptation, with a few changes here and there. There are some new subplots, and some characters go on different journeys, but the core story of Mark Grayson and the Viltrum Empire has been pretty faithful to what they did in the comics. Based on that, it’s safe to guess that the show’s ending will be close to what we saw in Invincible #144.

It’s worth noting that Kirkman has warned viewers that the show may deviate from the comics in some big ways. “I think anyone who feels comfortable — because they’ve read the comics, are familiar with the story and think they know what’s going to happen next — shouldn’t be,” Kirkman says in a Variety interview.

I suppose we’ll find out if we ever get to Invincible season nine.
