There haven’t been many bigger titles in manga over the past decade than Jujutsu Kaisen. The series has spawned an anime adaptation by MAPPA and a prequel film that both took the world by storm. Now, as the manga is set to end, publisher Shueisha has confirmed that there are over 100 million copies of Jujutsu Kaisen in circulation which puts it in pretty impressive company.
That 100 million number is not necessarily the number of volumes sold of Jujutsu Kaisen – instead, it refers to the copies that have been printed. It doesn’t refer to individual chapters, which are sold as part of the Weekly Shonen Jump collection. Rather, it refers to the number of compilation volumes that have been printed and shipped, both physically and digitally.
Even with that stipulation, that number puts Gege Akutami in elite company among manga creators. Only a few dozen manga reach the 100 million circulation mark, and even fewer manage to do it during their initial run. Titles like Dragon Ball and Fist of the North Star have decades to reach that point. Jujutsu Kaisen did it in a decade - and before the final chapter has been released.
For context, Jujutsu Kaisen has surpassed classic Shonen manga Hunter x Hunter, Fairy Tail, and Fullmetal Alchemist. There are also more copies in circulation than classics like Prince of Tennis or Captain Tsubasa. Getting 100 million copies into circulation is a massive achievement and yet it is going to get bigger as the final arcs of the manga are released in volume form. Jujutsu Kaisen is going to get even bigger in the years to come.
