Kentaro Miura didn’t want Berserk ending to be "grim": “I don’t really like that kind of entertainment”
Could Berserk have a happy ending? Kentaro Miura certainly thought so at once time.

The Berserk manga is well known for being one of the darkest mainstream works in the industry. It is the very definition of grimdark and is often cited as the inspiration for other titles in the genre. Because Kentaro Miura tragically died before he could complete the story, people often wonder what he imagined the end of Berserk would look like. It turns out he may have wanted Guts to get a happy ending in Berserk.
No, really. During an interview, Kentaro Miura was asked if it was possible that we could see a happy ending in Berserk. Considering how many dark subjects the manga tackles, that seems like a stretch. Miura, however, didn’t immediately dismiss the idea. “I’d say it’s possible. I used to have the final moves planned out, but lately I’ve been thinking I’d rather figure them out when I come to it, so now it’s hard to say what could happen. Being the sort of person I am, though, I actually don’t think I could let such a long, grim story end with a grim ending – like, say, having him suddenly die. I don’t really like that kind of entertainment. I’ll leave it to my subconscious.”
Since Miura’s death in 2021, his friend Kouji Mori has written Berserk using Miura’s notes and ideas as the basis for future chapters. Will that extend to a possible happy ending for Guts? What does happiness in the Berserk world even look like? These are questions we won’t know the answer to until we finally reach the epic conclusion to Berserk. After everything he’s gone through, Guts deserves a little happiness in the end.
