Krakoa has fallen, but the X-Men are not done with their mission.
In 2024, Marvel shook up the X-Men titles by dissolving the nation of Krakoa. Without their sovereign nation and the Five’s Resurrection Protocols, the X-Men were forced to rethink their mission as they built a bright new future for mutantkind. X-Men: From the Ashes wasn’t a back-to-basics relaunch; it was a bold new era that put the team in a more familiar status quo while trying new and exciting things. Spearheaded by Marvel executive editor Tom Brevoort, the new direction was a sales hit that kept readers guessing.
What was From the Ashes, and how many teams were involved? What were the various titles, and when did the era end? What makes it different from the Krakoa era?
Let’s dive into these questions, as the X-Men explore life in a post-Krakoa world…
How to read X-Men post-Krakoa/X-Men: From the Ashes in release order

The following reading order contains all the ongoing series, miniseries, and one-shots in the order they were released in. For example, X-Men and NYX ran concurrently, but since X-Men was launched before NYX, it’s listed first. How to read X-Men post-Krakoa/X-Men: From the Ashes in chronological order

Truth be told, you don’t have to worry too much about chronology with the X-Men: From the Ashes comics. The individual comics largely tell their own story, and aside from crossover storylines like Raid on Graymalkin, it doesn’t matter what order you read them in. It’s not clear if Uncanny X-Men #3 is set before, during, or after NYX #3, as the stories are self-contained. Marvel also likes to leave this vague, since getting too caught up in timeline issues leads to trouble. Just assume that a particular book like X-Men #7 takes place around the same time as the other books published that month.
As for the crossovers and events, here’s how to read them in chronological order…
- X-Men (volume 7) #8
- Uncanny X-Men (volume 6) #7
- X-Men (volume 7) #9
- Uncanny X-Men (volume 6) #8
- Uncanny X-Men (volume 6) #11
- NYX (volume 2) #9
- Storm (volume 5) #6
- X-Men (volume 7) #13
- X-Factor (volume 5) #8
- X-Force (volume 7) #9
- Exceptional X-Men #7
- X-Manhunt Omega #1
- Giant-Size X-Men (volume 3) #1
- Giant-Size Dark Phoenix Saga #1
- Giant-Size Age of Apocalypse #1
- Giant-Size of M #1
- Giant-Size X-Men (volume 3) #2
- X-Men: Rage of Revelation Overture #1
- World of Revelation #1
- Amazing X-Men (volume 3) #1-3
- Binary #1-3
- Laura Kinney: Sabretooth #1-3

When did the X-Men Krakoa era begin and end?

The X-Men Krakoa era began in 2019 with the miniseries House of X and Powers of X, and officially ended in June 2024 with X-Men #35/Uncanny X-Men #700. The mutant island of Krakoa is teleported to the White Hot Room, the realm that acts as the afterlife for the Phoenix Force. While some mutants elect to join Krakoa in its new home, the X-Men and many other mutants decide to stay behind on Earth. The X-Men no longer have their own sovereign nation and search for a new direction. For more on how the Krakoa era ended, check out our ending explained article.
When did X-Men: From the Ashes begin and end?

The X-Men: From the Ashes era began in July 2024 with the launch of X-Men (volume 7) #1. The era ended in December 2025 with X-Men: Age of Revelation Finale. Afterwards, a new era for the X-Men books began in 2026 with Shadows of Tomorrow
What’s the difference between the Krakoa era and the post-Krakoa era?

The Krakoa era featured the X-Men starting their own sovereign nation for mutants on the living island of Krakoa. The island offered amnesty for all mutants, including former villains. During the Krakoa era, the X-Men also had the power to cheat death using something called the Resurrection Protocols. It was complicated, but the quick explanation is that the X-Men combined the abilities of five powerful mutants and the island of Krakoa itself to revive fallen members.
The post-Krakoa era, also known as From the Ashes, is set after the nation was dissolved, with the X-Men back in traditional society. The post-Krakoa era is also marked by the arrival of Tom Brevoort, a longtime Marvel executive editor who took over the X-Men titles in July 2024. This meant new titles, new teams, and a new direction for Marvel’s mutants.

What’s next for the X-Men books?

Shadows of Tomorrow is the next phase of the X-Men saga. Launched in January 2026, the new publishing initiative follows the X-Men in the aftermath of the Age of Revelation storyline, which put the team a decade into the future. Shadows of Tomorrow follows the mutants as they try to stop this horrible future from occurring. Gail Simone, Jed MacKay, and other creators will continue their From the Ashes era titles. In addition, Marvel is launching some new X-Men titles, such as Inglorious X-Force and Generation: X-23. It’s a brave new world for the X-Men…if they can survive it.
