Marvel's new Miles Morales era is a "hyper-violent love letter to Brooklyn" for Spider-Man

A new era for Marvel's Miles Morales begins this summer, and in many ways he kinda needs it given his recent chaotic return trip to the Ultimate Universe earlier this year. Ultimate Black Panther's Bryan Edward Hill and returning Miles Morales artist Nico Leon (who worked on the original series with creators Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli) are doing it all with the August relaunch of Miles Morales: Spider-Man... and from how the writer describes it, it's kinetic, hyper-violent, and all Brooklyn.

"This is a kinetic, very action-focused, Superhero experience. Sometimes people think I'm too heady and dull, hahaha. But here I want to really entertain and have a thrilling, and emotionally relatable narrative," Hill says in a wide-ranging AMA recently on League of Comic Geeks.

Hill first wrote Miles Morales back in 2018 for a Spider-Man Annual, and says this 2026 relaunch is bigger, more biting, while still being emotionally grounded.

"Miles believes that the right thing to do is the only thing to do," says Hill. "That's the power of youth. You aren't baked by cynicism. That's why the world ultimately belongs to the young."

Hill, who comes to Miles Morales: Spider-Man after the conclusion of his Ultimate Black Panther series, says this upcoming run is much more tightly focused than that, which fits his screenwriting sensibilities. In fact, he has a north star for the 2026 Miles Morales: Spider-Man comic in the films of two writer/director brothers.

The Safdie Bros' films are kind of on the mind. Not the subject matter but the constant motion and relentlessness of Uncut Gems, Good Time," says Hill.

Although Nico Leon is listed as the primary artist of Miles Morales: Spider-Man, Valentin De Landro is joining the series as co-artist in what Hill says isn't deadline-based, but because of the story.

"... it'll make sense when you see the issues and what I'm doing there," says Hill. "I'm putting a new character in his world and that's been fun."

Hill describes his Miles Morales: Spider-Man run as a "a full-throated superhero story" that's more down to earth than recent stories featuring the characters. That being said, he says any Spider-Man story has four key ingredients: "Real world issues. Ethical dilemmas. Kinetic action. Villains with dimension."

Miles Morales: Spider-Man #1 goes on sale on August 12.

Marvel’s Miles Morales redefines Spider-Man without replacing Peter Parker.
