DC's low-key breakout new star is Galaxy, the prettiest star

How Galaxy has quietly become a major new star inside DC

DC rolls out new characters seemingly on a weekly basis. Just this week we have stories about a new character debuting in Titans: Beast World and a trio of new characters in Rafael Grampá's Batman: Gargoyle of Gotham. But if you've been a fan of superhero comics for any length of time, you'll realize many of these vaunted new creations will not stick around.

But we've found one who is, and one you might have missed.

She's an alien princess disguised as a human boy, and they debuted in May 2022's OGN Galaxy: The Prettiest Star by Jadzia Axelrod and Jess Taylor. Her name is, of course, Galaxy.

After some research, Popverse has learned Galaxy: The Prettiest Star burned through its first print run in 12 months, leading to a second printing in May 2023. Then just six months later, that printing sold out leading to a third printing that just arrived in the past few weeks.

While individual comics will sometimes go back for reprints (and publishers make it a point to announce it), in this case it's an abnormality - as Galaxy is a 200+-page original graphic novel with an all new, never-before-seen character and from a creative team without a preestablished fanbase.

As it turns out, great comics sell well - and word of mouth works.

The popularity of this book is being noticed by DC not just in reprints, but by their bringing Jadzia Axelrod to write the mainstream Hawlgirl series - she brought Galaxy along with her.

Have you met Galaxy yet? If not, why not? Tell us in the comments.
