Clair Obscur and Final Fantasy star Ben Starr doesn't want to be in more franchises, he wants more original video games

Ben Starr has talked about how much he'd love to be in the Legacy of Kain. But at ECCC 2026, he said "We should be building new IPs" like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

After voicing Clive Rosfield in Final Fantasy XVI, Ben Starr became one of the most beloved voice actors in gaming, eventually leading him to his role of Verso in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 (and the host of the SQUARE ENIX Publisher Sale, when he's not being thwarted by Matt Mercer and his puppet self). In case you've been living under a rock, Clair Oscur was a massive hit, winning the coveted Game of the Year Award at, you guessed it, the Game Awards last year. It's an impressive victory for an indie game from France.

Since Starr himself is a longtime gamer, a fan at Emerald City Comic Con 2026's Clair Obscur panel asked if he had any interest in playing a role in other gaming franchises. Starr had a wonderfully thoughtful response that reflects the potential sea change that Clair Obscur can bring to the gaming industry.

"I've been very vocal about how I would love to be a part of the Legacy of Kain franchise. But this is a panel about Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. And I think the reason we're here is because original IP in 2026 should be king. Of course I would want to be a part of Legacy of Kain. It's because of the performances that have inspired me as an actor. But I think we should be building new IPs, not always looking back to the past. Like I said, huge Resident Evil fan. What they're doing with that franchise I think is insanely good. But I would love to be in the next whatever Clair Obscur is. Let's originate characters."

At the same panel, Starr noted that he was in the middle of a 4-hour Resident Evil Requiem speedrun. You can catch the entire Clair Obscur panel from ECCC 2026 below.
