There are certain truths in the world that we all must respect. Never feed your gremlin after midnight. There's always money in the banana stand. Literally anything that Philomena Cunk says. It's all valid. And something that should be added to this is "never mess with Magic: The Gathering's color pie." 

This is the underlying ethos of Magic: The Gathering's upcoming Reality Fracture set. Described by Magic's head of design, Mark Rosewater, as the game's version of a "What If" story from Marvel Comics, Reality Fracture presents alternate versions of the game's most iconic characters, spells, and settings thanks to planeswalker Jace Beleren creating a new universe called the Echoverse. For instance, the Echoverse's version of Chandra Nalaar is blue and has ice powers, in contrast to her mainline universe's fire powers. 

"This set does a lot of 'what ifs,'" Rosewater said at a press event for Reality Fracture. "Whenever we do something in a different color, it is true to that color and that color's color pie. So while we are really showing you a lot of 'what ifs' creatively, we are not making the mistake we made last time. The color pie stays true." 

And what did they do last time? "We did, in fact, do the 'What If' theme once before in the second set of the Time Spiral block, Planar Chaos. There, we messed not just with the fabric of reality, but the fabric of Magic itself. We messed with the color pie, and we learned an important lesson, which is stop messing with the color pie!" Rosewater said with a laugh. 

Prerelease for Reality Fracture will commence on September 25 and run to October 1. The set will be released on October 2.
