28 Years Later release date: Horror sequel is ready to eat your brains (and everything else) this June

It's not taken 28 years for the follow-up to 28 Days Later to be made, but it's close - the wait is almost over as 28 Years Later is due in theaters this summer

While it’s not taken quite as long as the title may suggest, zombie fans have been waiting for quite some time for 28 Years Later — 18 years, to be exact. (The last entry in the series was 2007’s 28 Weeks Later; we have a guide to help you watch the series so far.) So, how much longer does everyone have to wait for the release of the next chapter in Danny Boyle’s undead horror series? We’ve got the answer.

Reuniting the original creative team of 20 Days Later — that’s writer Alex Garland and director Danny Boyle, both of whom skipped 28 Weeks Later — the release date of 28 Years Later is June 20, 2025. And it’s worth remembering that the this is only the beginning of the story; the follow-up, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, has already been filmed and is in post-production as you read this. But what about 28 Years Later…? Well, here’s the trailer:

Sony’s description of the movie looks like this: “It’s been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected. One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily-defended causeway. When one of the group leaves the island on a mission into the dark heart of the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders, and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors as well.”

28 Years Later will be released June 20.
