Spider-Noir creeps, Invincible expands, and Backrooms lurks: Popverse Playlist for May 23-29 2026
Nicolas Cage wants to be your less-friendly neighborhood wall-crawler while Robert Kirkman is bringing a new hero into the Invincible Universe... and A24 just wants you to get lost

Your eyes do not deceive you: it really is Friday, meaning that we can finally say goodbye to this week and look forward to the future ahead — a future that includes a three-day weekend for many people in the U.S. and the U.K., for entirely different reasons. But how should you be spending that time — and the remaining four days of the next week? We have some thoughts, because this is Popverse Playlist, and that’s exactly what we like to do here.
This week: a new spider-hero swings onto our screens, another new hero debuts in the pages of Image Comics’ current Invincible series, and we get lost in some confusing liminal spaces that we probably should’ve stayed away from in the first place. Your pop culture planning starts now!
If you only watch one show this week, then it really has to be… Spider-Noir

When it comes to doing whatever a spider can, Spider-Noir, Amazon’s new Sony Spider-Man series (Say that three times fast), is hoping that spiders can act like classic noir detectives and bring in lots of viewers in the process. Nic Cage reprises his role from the Spider-Verse movies in this definitely-not-a-spin-off show about Ben Reilly: a down on his luck P.I. with spider-powers and a chip on each shoulder. (There may be some new takes on familiar Spider-Man villains to make Reilly's day worse, but that's because every Spider-Man has the Parker Luck, even if they're not actually a Peter Parker.) Running on both cable channel MGM+ and Prime Video, it might not be a classic Spider-Man story, but it is the first live-action Spider-Man show on television in 47 years. How could you not want to check out that piece of pop culture history?
Spider-Noir debuts on MGM+ May 25, and on Prime Video May 27.
If you check out one movie this week, then it should be… Backrooms

Graduating from online creepypasta to a fully-fledged A24-released contemporary horror movie, Backrooms sees director Kane Parsons expanding the mythology (and, arguably, removing some of the mystery) of his series of web videos about seemingly endless, inexplicable liminal spaces by introducing… well, physical sets and real actors, as much as anything else. The promotion for this one has been purposefully vague in terms of plot details, but the trailer’s vibes are entirely on point:
Backrooms opens in theaters May 29.
If you can only pick up one comic this week, then make sure it’s… Capes #7

Sure, Invincible finished its fourth season a month ago on Prime Video, but that doesn’t mean that there’s no new Invincible stories for fans to discover out there — this spin-off series is currently showing what was happening on Earth during the Viltrumite War, but there’s an extra reason to pick up this particular issue: the debut of Ella Mental, a new Invincible Universe character in a back-up strip by Invincible co-creators Robert Kirkman and Cory Walker. What’s that you’re saying? The future of the Invincible Universe begins in this very issue, you might say? It certainly looks like it — and you can get in on the ground floor when the issue lands on comic book store shelves May 27.
