Avatar 4 and 5 are "full speed ahead" just as soon as James Cameron and the production team figure out their new filming technology
James Cameron is a man who loves to play with filmmaking technology, so it shouldn't be a surprise that his Avatar 4 production has some new toys to play with.

Whatever criticism you can lay on James Cameron, you cannot say he gives up on a project halfway through. Despite taking 13 years to release the sequel to 2009’s Avatar, it is clear that he intends to see the Avatar franchise to its conclusion. Despite some reported budgetary issues that threatened to pause production on Avatar 4, one producer on the series wants to assure fans that the next two Avatar sequels are still going forward.
During an interview to celebrate Avatar: Fire & Ash coming to home video, producer Rae Sanchini said that Avatar 4 and 5 are both still going ahead, but have hit a delay as the team tries to incorporate new technology into the production process. “We’re really moving into a more generally accessible platform,” she said. The issue is that the technology that the first three Avatar films used was “very bespoke” and required “a lot of training for new hires.” The new system will apparently make it possible to train people more quickly, which will result in a tighter production time.
“Right now we’re figuring out the schedule,” Sanchini continues. “We’re working hard on it right now, budgeting, scheduling, planning, building out our new pipeline for them. As far as we’re concerned, we’re full speed ahead.”
So from a production standpoint, work continues on the next two Avatar films. Avatar 4 is planned for a December 2029 release date, so James Cameron and the rest of the production team have plenty of time to wrap their heads around the new technology at their disposal.
