What’s the hold up with the next Fast & Furious movie? Alan Ritchson says money

Alan Ritchson says we haven’t seen the next Fast & Furious film yet because the movies are expensive to make (but it’s still happening)

If there’s one thing the Fast & Furious films have taught us, it’s that family can overcome anything. However, family can also be expensive.

Fast X, the most recent film in the franchise, was released in 2023 and became the fifth highest-grossing movie of the year; Fast Forever, the next (and, if rumor and Vin Diesel are to be believed, final) film in the series, was announced, and while it was given a 2028 release date, there have already been some delays in the film's slow drive to the starting line. After all, it was originally teased for a 2025 release. According to Alan Ritchson, who played Agent Aimes in Fast X, it all comes down to budget.

“I know a lot. We have conversations all the time. I’m a big part of those conversations,” Alan Ritchson told Josh Horowitz during an appearance on Happy Sad Confused when talking about the fate of the Fast franchise. “There’s just a lot of obstacles. It’s expensive to make that. It’s too expensive to make those. It doesn’t make a ton of sense. There’s a more efficient way to shoot those shows. There has to be a way to show restraint while honoring the fact that this world had expanded to something humongous that gets very difficult.”

Considering that there's apparently a Fast & Furious TV show in the works, here's hoping everyone involved is serious in trying to find a more cost-effective way of telling these stories. Of course, Ritchson suggested that there's already been some movement in that direction.

“We’re now at the crossroads of something very hard to figure out,” he said. “Everybody’s figuring it out. I think there’s going to be another one, I think it’s going to be great. It’s just a matter of solving some big problems. Very real problems.”

It looks like it will be a while until the next movie, despite what Vin Diesel might say. In the meantime, feel free to use our watch guide to catch up on the rest of the series.
