The pending Warner Bros and Paramount deal could clear the way for a Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter crossover film, says Liu Kang's actor

The pending deal would make clear at least one hurdle for a potential Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter crossover film, but Ludi Lin admits we should all "just live in the moment for now."

Both Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter have been titans in the fighting game community for generations, but it has been a long time since they had to duke it out on the big screen. With both Mortal Kombat II and Street Fighter heading to cinemas this year, it is an opportunity to find out which one has the most excited fans. However, Liu Kang’s actor in Mortal Kombat II says he can see a future where the two franchises crossover in a film. Just maybe not right away.

Speaking to IGN on the day that the latest Street Fighter trailer came out, Ludi Lin was inevitably asked what he thought about his own film’s rival franchise. Lin joined the Mortal Kombat universe with 2021’s Mortal Kombat reboot. While he had plenty of positive things to say about Street Fighter, he also mused about the possibility of a crossover between Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter in the future. Thanks to a pending, controversial merger, it looks possible.

“That’s a really interesting question,” Lin explained. “Now that there’s a pending sale of Warner Bros over to Paramount, who’s doing Street Fighter, it’s very possible. It’d be so much fun.”

However, there is a catch that goes beyond the sticky rights issues for both sets of characters. “But tonally, I feel like they’re very different movies. But I don’t know. Let’s just live in the moment for now.”

A potential crossover between Mortal Kombat II and Street Fighter doesn’t seem likely right now, but anything could be possible if both films are hits at the box office and end up under the same company. Similar to how Marvel gets to play with the X-Men franchise now that Disney owns Fox.
