Marvel Studios Scarlet Witch, Elizabeth Olsen, admits people might be "exhausted" by the MCU, but she'd love to return

Olsen says that "we might culturally get a little bit exhausted by," the sprawling MCU, but that doesn't stop her from wanting to put on those Maximoff reds again

Stop me if you've heard these two words bandied about in your favorite online forums of late: superhero fatigue. It's a bit of a hot-button debate in Hollywood right now - whether or not the age of the superhero blockbuster is coming to an end. We heard it a bunch before the MCU caught a second wind with Deadpool & Wolverine, then James Gunn denounced and, by releasing a positively-reviewed, financially successful little flick called Superman, offered a rebuke. Now, another A-lister with a cape on her resume is weighing in, and she's admitting a bit more than you might think from a Marvel-employed actor.

Elizabeth Olsen, AKA the Scarlet Witch/Wanda Maximoff in such projects as WandaVision, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and even the recent Marvel Zombies, recently sat down with People for an interview during the Hamptons International Film Festival. During the discussion, Olsen gushed about how lucky she felt to have been such a massive part of the MCU, but also admitted that the MCU itself was getting... well, massive.

"Some people have ongoing television series that they get to return to," said Olsen, "Very few, I feel like, get to be a part of franchises that, I know we might culturally get a little bit exhausted by, but there is something about them that becomes very familial."

And she means it when she says "familial" - exhausting though the franchise might become, she still adores it. And isn't that just the case with family?

"It is something that I love," the Love & Death star confessed, "And it's something I always want to return to... I think the thing that's been so special about the last five years is I've gotten to do so much with the character that I never thought I would. There are still character through lines that have happened in the comics that I'd love to do that I think fans also want to."

Well, that's an interesting tease. If anyone has a list of the Scarlet Witch comics they know Elizabeth Olsen has read, do send it over, won't you? Tease aside though, what does Olsen say to people who were more interested in the first part of her admission, the folks to whom superhero fatigue is a certainty?

"I mean," Olsen concluded, "These movies aren't for critics, these movies are for fans."

Marvel Zombies is streaming on Disney+ now.

Consider this a meta post-credits scene for Marvel fans - the four key articles you need to read next to continue the thrills:

Grant DeArmitt

Grant DeArmitt: Grant DeArmitt (he/him) likes horror, comics, and the unholy union of the two. In the past, and despite their better judgment, he has written for Nightmare on Film Street and Newsarama. He lives in Brooklyn with his partner, Kingsley, and corgi, Legs.
