The Shards Season 1 release date: When the Ryan Murphy x Bret Easton Ellis horror thriller series debuts on FX

The series is based on Ellis' semi-autobiographical novel of the same name

In The Shards, a new series based on Bret Easton Ellis' semi-autobiographical novel of the same name, a teenage version of Ellis (Igby Rigney) must navigate life in high school against the backdrop of a 1980s Los Angeles that's being terrorized by a serial killer, The Trawler. Co-created by Ellis and Ryan Murphy (American Horror Story; Grotesquerie), the show will be here before the summer has concluded.

The Shards Season 1 will debut on August 5th, 2026 at 9:00 PM ET/6:00 PM PT on FX. The first two episodes of the series will premiere at that time, and will be available to stream on Hulu the next day. Currently, a trailer for the series has yet to be made available.

Based on Ellis' semi-autobiographical 2023 novel of the same name, The Shards is a high school horror-thriller that is sure to swiftly win over a certain type of viewer. In addition to Rigney as 17-year-old Ellis, the cast also includes Homer Gere as Robert Mallory, Kaia Gerber as Susan Reynolds, Wes Bentley as Terry Schaffer, Hayes Warner as Debbie Shaffer and Graham Campbell as Thom Wright. Rounding out the cast is Jordan Roth as Steven Reinhardt, Evan Rachel Wood as Liz Schaffer and Owen Painter in an undisclosed recurring role.

Season 1 of The Shards will debut on FX on August 5th, 2026 at 9:00 PM ET/6:00 PM PT, and episodes will be available for streaming the next day on Hulu.
