Why Pike and Grog are Vox Machina's best (and worst) pals, according to the Critical Role cast
Critical Role's Travis Willingham and Ashley Johnson break down what makes Pike and Grog so special together on The Legend of Vox Machina

Who doesn't love a good Dynamic Duo? And no, I'm not talking Batman and Robin, I'm talking Pike and Grog in Critical Role's The Legend of Vox Machina show on Prime Video. So what happens when a gnome cleric and half-giant barbarian become best friends? Shenanigans.
Ahead of the release of The Legend of Vox Machina season 4 on Prime Video, Popverse's Trent Cannon spoke with the originators of Pike and Grog themselves, Ashley Johnson and Travis Willingham, about what makes the two buds so delightful to watch.
"I think they're very good at encouraging their more base sides, whether it's getting into a fight or pounding some mugs of ale. I think they are the absolute best wingmen for each other that you could possibly hope for. But I also think they're incredible mirrors for each other," Willingham argued. "Pike has this incredible sense of self and faith and goodness, while Grog is all about loyalty and more of the simple side in keeping things not as complicated as they could be. And I think that's a great pairing for the two of them. I'll tell you what, left to their own devices, I think we've seen what a little time off can do for the both of them."
"I feel like they keep themselves on the straight and narrow. They can bring out the worst, but they can also bring out the best in each other. And I think also because Grog has so much heart, like he's just a big teddy bear. And I think they're such a funny combo, but it works. And I think they keep themselves from being too good and too bad," added Johnson.
It's hard to imagine what an epic fantasy story like The Legend of Vox Machina would be without great friendships like Pike and Grog's at the center.
You can catch season 4 of The Legend of Vox Machina when it premieres on Prime Video on June 3, 2026.
