If you're something of an animation fan yourself, then chances are you've heard Kari Wahlgren's voice at one point or another. The actress has voiced characters on shows like Rick and Morty, Dandadan, Wolverine and the X-Men, FLCL, Star Trek: Lower Decks, and of course, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. Wahlgren plays Aunt May on the latest Spidey show, and she spoke with our video producer, Ashley Victoria Robinson, about the elements that brought this version of Aunt May to life for her. You can check it out in the video below.
This is not Wahlgren's first foray into the world of Spider-Man. Previously, she voiced Mary Jane Watson and Gwen Stacy, the two most important women in Peter Parker's life aside from Aunt May. Reflecting on her experiences with these characters, Wahlgren said, "Mary Jane Watson was probably the most challenging because in that case, it was a voice match for Kirsten Dunst. So I had to get approval from her, and then from the studio... there was that extra little bit of pressure there." Dunst, of course, played Mary Jane in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy.
In constructing a unique voice for this version of Aunt May, Wahlgren notes that she takes things "project by project," meaning she remains flexible to the particular "vision" guiding each adaptation. Aunt May's age has varied from project to project, but Wahlgren was a fan of her character design on Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. "When I finally saw the artwork, she was much cuter than I thought she was going to be! I was like, 'Oh my gosh!' ... She's young and hip and her hair is much better than mine!" Wahlgren quipped.
