HBO's Lanterns will have a giant footprint, says DC Studios series star

How much will Lanterns impact the DCU and other superhero projects? Massively, according to one star.

The first episode of Lanterns is out, and it introduces two more Green Lanterns to James Gunn and DC Studios’ new DCU - plus several other important characters. Having a character like Hal Jordan, who remains one of the most popular and iconic Green Lantern in comics, in the show certainly implies that Lanterns will have a big impact on the DCU. However, one star believes this series will reach further and become genre-defining for every superhero series that comes after.

At the premiere of Lanterns last week, Poorna Jagannathan spoke to reporters about her experiences and expectations for the new DC Studios series. Jagannathan plays Zoe in Lanterns, though the exact nature of her character hasn’t been revealed just yet even after the first episode's airing.

“I don’t think that only this universe will be affected by [Lanterns],” Jagannathan explained when describing the impact the show will have on the DCU going forward. “I think every show in the genre will be affected by what happened on Lanterns. It’ll be a blueprint on how to take something big and keep it with a beating heart.”

Lanterns follows Hal Jordan as he trains his backup/replacement as Green Lantern of Sector 2814. Along the way, the pair encounter a series of gruesome murders that will clearly have an impact on the Green Lantern Corps as a whole and the entire DC Universe. It will also have a direct tie-in to 2027’s Man of Tomorrow, as Aaron Pierre will reprise his role as John Stewart in that film.

The first episode of Lanterns is currently streaming on HBO Max, with new episodes coming out on Sundays each week.
