Star Trek: Starlet Academy actor blasts current Paramount ownership for abandoning the series

Star Trek actor Robert Picardo says Paramount’s new owners didn’t bother to promote Starfleet Academy

Starfleet’s biggest enemy isn’t a military empire; it’s a media empire.

On January 15, 2016 Starfleet Academy premiered on Paramount+. The series, which focused on a diverse group of alien and human cadets, was review bombed by viewers (and non-viewers) who accused the show of being “woke.” Two months after the series premiered, Paramount+ announced that the upcoming second season, which is currently in production, would be the show’s last.

Robert Picardo, who plays the Doctor on the series, blames Paramount’s new owners, staying they never gave the show a chance. “I wish we had been given more time to build an audience,” Robert Picardo says during a panel at Spacecon 2026.

“Our show was conceived under the prior ownership regime at CBS Paramount and once the new owners took over, we had no support with the release of the show. We didn’t get any ads. You couldn’t even find us. I had friends who said, where is Starfleet Academy? I said, it’s on Paramount+. And they said, I have Paramount+, I can’t find it. And I thought, well that’s weird. After the premiere episode, it kind of dropped off the menu. Usually if people have a history on Paramount+ of watching Star Trek, you would pitch them the new Star Trek show, but that didn’t happen on mine. I wish we had gotten more support.”

Starfleet Academy season two is currently scheduled to premiere in 2027.
