Regular Show's Rigby didn't expect the character to grow - but noticed it as soon as it happened
Rigby himself, William Salyers, told us about when he suspected his half of the Regular Show lead characters "was maturing normally," as opposed to Mordecai

If you've only watched the first couple of episodes - hell even just the first season - of Cartoon Network's classic Regular Show, you might be surprised to learn that there's quite a bit of character growth for the strangely-drawn, cosmically-adventuring bluejay and raccoon at the story's heart. And as said raccoon's voice actor admits - that wasn't exactly something he expected to see either.
That raccoon is, of course, Rigby, voiced by the incomparable William Salyers. Along with fellow cast members Janie Haddad Tompkins (Margaret), Minty Lewis (Eileen), and Sam Marin (Benson/Pops), Salyers attended the regular Show: Behind the Madness panel at this year's Emerald City Comic Con, where the subject of Rigby's character growth came up. Which of those growing moments, asked the panel's handsome moderator, stood out to Salyers the most?
"It was one of the subtler ones," said Salyers, "And it actually involved Eileen. I really love that we spent all this time on Mordecai's relationship drama and then somewhere in the middle of all that, Rigby just lets slip that he's in this successful relationship with someone. You just don't think of Rigby as getting stuff like that right."
"That, for me, was the first indication that he was just sort of maturing normally," Salyers continued, "So even though that wasn't like a huge thing, it was like, 'Oh, Rigby's starting to get his act together. So that stands out for me."
Salyers says that he wasn't aware of the Regular Show writers' plans to mature Rigby in this way or even in the classic graduation episode, but that, "I clocked it when we got the script. I didn't get the scripts any earlier than anybody else did, but I certainly was always keeping an an eye on his progress and I noticed that the writers were letting him grow."
"That's very exciting for any actor," Salyers concluded, "To get to play what we call an arc, you know, to actually change over time. And so yeah, I always clock that."
Regular Show is streaming now on Hulu. You can watch the ECCC '26 Regular Show panel with Janie Haddad Tompkins, Minty Lewis, Sam Marin, & William Salyers right here:
