The Boys season 5 had to film episodes out of order to accommodate Jensen Ackles' schedule
Jensen Ackles, who plays Soldier Boy on The Boys, was shooting another television show at the same time as the Prime Video show

The Boys season 5 is practically a Supernatural reunion, with Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, and Misha Collins all appearing in the final season of the Prime Video show. But just because the show was building to a close doesn't mean that there weren't extra hurdles for the cast and crew to overcome. And at Emerald City Comic Con 2026, Karl Urban (Billy Butcher) dished on why he and much of the cast of the show didn't see much of Jensen Ackles, due to scheduling conflicts.
"[The biggest prank Jensen Ackles pulled on us] was agreeing to be on our show and then taking another show at the same time," Urban reveals. "So we had to shoot the final season of The Boys completely out of order because we were waiting for Jensen."
That other show was Prime Video's Countdown, of which Jensen Ackles was the star - and which filmed during the same period as The Boys season 5. That series debuted last year, and following which Ackles has been working on his The Boys spinoff, Vought Rising.
"Jensen's storylines this season were sort of more intricately bound with Homelander," Urban said of Ackles' The Boys season 4 screen time. "So we didn't really get too much interaction with him."
The actor suggested that the fan who asked the question about what kinds of pranks Jensen pulled on the cast this season should ask it to Antony Starr, who plays Homelander on the show. Whenever you're ready, Antony, we'll be all ears.
