Will Trent Season 5: Release date, cast, and what to expect from Will and Angie's new dynamic

Will Trent will not return to ABC in 2026 - but a new season will arrive early in 2027

The Will Trent Season 4 finale aired on May 5th, 2026, leaving fans heartbroken over a shocking death - and wondering what's next after the show jumped ahead in time to set up the next season. They'll find out in early 2027, with ABC bringing Will Trent Season 5 to the screen midseason.

Will Trent stars Ramón Rodríguez in the titular role, a dyslexic orphan who grows up to become a Georgia Bureau of Investigation Special Agent. A friend from the child care system, Atlanta Police Department Homicide Detective Angie Polaski (Erika Christensen), works alongside Trent and also serves as his intermittent love interest - something complicated significantly by the Season 4 finale. Rounding out the cast is Iantha Richardson as GBI Special Agent Faith Mitchell, Jake McLaughlin as APD Homicide Detective Michael Ormewood and Bluebell as Betty Maria White Trent, Trent's pet Chihuahua.

The final episode of Season 4 saw Angie give birth to daughter Edie after a car accident that caused the death of her partner Seth (Scott Foley) - a tragedy that left her too depressed to take care of her child, leading Will to take a leave of absence to do so. The new, unexpected, family unit was shown growing together throughout the episode, teasing what might lie ahead in the next season.

"I think that Angie and Will are the beating heart of this show. And I don’t know what the future is going to bring — we’re still all trying to take a little break, but we’ll get into it. But it is nice to have them close again," said showrunner Liz Heldens earlier this year. "And, I mean, I have friends who were like, 'I miss Will and Angie having scenes together. I miss them.' And it is nice to get them really, really in each other’s orbit and helping each other and pulling each other through like they have been."

Will Trent Season 6 will be part of ABC's announced midseason additions to its 2026-2027 broadcast year. While the network has yet to announce an official return date for the show, based on ABC's history, it's safe to assume that Will Trent Season 6 will begin in January 2027.
