On Wednesday, June 10, Marvel Comics' Avengers: Armageddon event will kick off with the release of the first issue by Chip Zdarsky, Frank Alpizar, and Delio Diaz. But, attendees of an Opening Night event in Los Angeles for Magic: The Gathering's upcoming crossover set with Marvel Comics last week were treated to a copy of Avengers: Armageddon #1 early, with the Magic: The Gathering variant cover by artist Ryan Stegman.
For some eagle-eyed fans and comic store owners, this could illicit some consternation about Marvel releasing the comic in a public event before they are able to sell the issue. It also brings about the possibility of spoilers floating around online, if you know where to look.
(We've read it, but we'll wait.)
The special Avengers: Armageddon #1 came polybagged with a Warstorm Surge promo card that bears the same artwork as the variant cover by Stegman. This is part of a larger move by both Marvel Comics and Wizards of the Coast, where every copy of the first printing of Avengers: Armageddon, including variants, will come polybagged and with the Warstorm Surge promo card.
Avengers: Armageddon has been billed as "a dramatic turning point in Avengers history" by Marvel, and will dovetail into the relaunch of the Avengers title unfolding later this year with Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto at the reins. Armageddon arrives at a time when Marvel is continuing its collaboration with Wizards of the Coast after the Magic: The Gathering x Marvel's Spider-Man set that hit game shops last fall. The Magic: The Gathering x Marvel Super Heroes set will be released on June 26, making it high tide for Earth's Mightiest Heroes.
Whether or not you play Magic: The Gathering, if you buy a copy of the first printing of Avengers: Armageddon, you'll end up the owner of one MTG card. Perhaps it'll be enough to get you aboard for when the entire Marvel Super Heroes set drops in game shops later this month.
