Robert Kirkman’s kids like to annoy him with Invincible brainrot memes, especially “Are you sure”

Yes, Robert Kirkman is aware of the “Are you sure” meme, and his kids like to annoy him with it

If you’ve been to certain corners of the internet, then you know that Invincible is having a second life in the world of brainrot memes. If you don’t know what a brainrot meme is, you probably don’t have a child under the age of 22 living in your home. A brainrot meme refers to an absurd, irreverent, and often repetitive joke with little to no intellectual value. If you want examples, go to YouTube or TikTok and simply search ‘Invincible brainrot.’ Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

Invincible co-creator Robert Kirkman has seen many of the memes, and while he isn’t sure what to make of them, he appreciates the passion fans have for the comic and television series.

“I feel like social media has kind of outgrown me to a certain extent,” Robert Kirkman says during an appearance on The Empire Escape Pod Podcast. “I’m also very busy, so I’m not as plugged in as I used to be. I’m overwhelmed by the response to Invincible, so I can’t keep track of all the stuff that’s going on. The brainrot videos alone.”

One of the biggest memes is based on the moment Nolan says “Are you sure” during the pilot episode. I found this out the hard way during a conversation with a 20-year-old. That moment has been riffed on in numerous videos, and there’s an entire Roblox game based around the line (seriously). Kirkman is aware of this particular brainrot, because his kids won’t let him escape it.

“I’ve seen that. That’s a thing. Anytime anyone says, ‘Are you sure,’ with my kids around me, it’s like, ‘Oh, they’re going to do it.’ My daughter especially will be like, ‘Eh? Are you sure?’ And my wife, who has no idea what I do, she’s like, ‘What are they doing?’”

In fairness, this is a question all parents ask whenever their kids recite a brainrot meme.
