Beyonce Knowles has won 35 Grammy Awards, the most for any artist ever. She holds the record for highest-grossing tour by a black artist. In 2022 Rolling Stone named her the world’s greatest living entertainer. Beyonce Knowles has many accomplishments she can be proud of, but being a Pussycat isn’t one of them.

In 2000 MGM Pictures and Universal Pictures were co-producing a Josie and the Pussycats movie, and they were looking for a real musician to give the cast some authenticity. Beyonce Knowles, who was still performing with Destiny’s Child at the time, read for the role of Valerie Brown. The role ultimately went to Rosario Dawson, who the producers felt could perform the script’s more comedic moments. Dawson spent years unaware that she had beat Beyonce out for the role.

“I heard many years later that Beyonce had been offered the role. I don’t know what weird alternative universe situation that happens, but okay,” Rosario Dawson says in disbelieve during a Josie and the Pussycats reunion panel at Florida Supercon.

Dawson was then asked if she’s run into Beyonce since learning the news.

“Oh yeah, for sure. We didn’t talk about that though. I remember there was another role actually that I had been up for, and she took that one, so I think we’re even.”

Dawson didn’t elaborate on what that role was, but I’m sure Beyonce killed it. Knowles may have more Grammy Awards than Dawson ever will, but Rosario got to be one of the Pussycats, and that’s something no one can ever take away from her.
