Warning: Spoilers ahead for Deadpool & Wolverine
Deadpool & Wolverine is the story of Wade Wilson and Logan….but which Logan? The latest Marvel Studios film is a raunchy action-adventure buddy comedy featuring Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson and Hugh Jackman as Logan. However, before teaming up with Wolverine, Deadpool has to figure out which Wolverine he’s actually going to be working with. This means taking a trip through the multiverse, where we meet lots of interesting Wolverine variants. Did you recognize all of them? Here’s a brief breakdown of the Wolverines that Deadpool met as journeyed across the Loganverse….
Logan’s skeleton
The first Wolverine Deadpool tries to recruit is the one Hugh Jackman played in the 20th Century Fox X-Men films. Yes, he died in the 2017 film Logan, but Deadpool reasons that Wolverine’s healing factor probably brought him back to life.
Nope.
Deadpool digs him up, and he’s nothing but an Adamantium skeleton. Oh well.
Comic accurate height Wolverine
Deadpool steps into another timeline, where he finds a short Wolverine. This is a reference to Wolverine’s height in the comics. According to various Marvel sourcebooks, Logan is roughly 5’3, but his height has fluctuated depending on the artist. Either way, Deadpool can’t stop making fun of the short Wolverine, and eventually decides to continue his hunt elsewhere.
Weapon X
Next, we see a Wolverine with a metal arm. This is Weapon X, the Wolverine from the Age of Apocalypse storyline. It’s an alternate reality thing.
Anyway, he has no patience for Deadpool and quickly attacks Wade.
Patch
Deadpool approaches a sharply dressed Wolverine at a cards table. This version of Logan has a patch on his left eye. This is a reference to Patch, a persona that Logan used when he was hanging out in the fictional island Madripoor. It’s basically Wolverine playing as James Bond.
Cavillerine
All of the Wolverines we meet in the multiverse are played by Hugh Jackman…except one. When one version of Wolverine turns around, Deadpool is surprised to see a bearded Henry Cavill. This version of Wolverine has been nicknamed ‘the Cavillerine,’ by fans online.
Deadpool excitedly tells Cavill that Marvel will treat him better than DC did. The Cavillerine doesn’t care and throws Deadpool across the room.
Old Man Logan
Next, we see a grizzled older version of Logan (once again played by Hugh Jackman) sitting on a porch with a shotgun. He shoots Wade within seconds.
This is a reference to Old Man Logan, an aged version of Wolverine from a post-apocalyptic future. The character later journeyed to the present day Marvel Universe where he operated with the X-Men for some time.
Uncanny X-Men #251 cover Wolverine
Next, we see a recreation of the Uncanny X-Men #251 cover. It’s Logan, being crucified on a giant X, surrounded by a mountain of skulls.
Deadpool just stares instead of helping him down. Maybe he’s a fan of that classic cover.
Brown and tan costume Wolverine
Deadpool continues his search and runs into a Wolverine wearing the brown and tan version of his costume. This suit was introduced in Uncanny X-Men #139. Deadpool namechecks John Byrne, the penciler who initially designed the suit. Wade notes that Logan once fought the Hulk in that suit….cueing the Hulk to show up and punch Deadpool into the next reality.
Broken Wolverine
The final Logan we meet isn’t one from any particular comic book storyline. It’s a version of Logan who left the X-Men after an argument. After his departure, the team was killed in battle, leaving Wolverine alone and broken. This version of Logan teams up with Deadpool for the remainder of the movie, hoping to find some redemption.
Does he? Well, you’ll have to see Deadpool & Wolverine to find out. We can’t spoil everything!
